Context

The Aixplorer is part of the Route Charlemagne, Aachen’s new tourist concept. Named after Charlemagne, who used Aachen as the center of his empire, it links the sights of the city and displays Aachen as an European city and a city of science.

Since the opening of the Aachen city hall as the first station of the Route Charlemagne on the 27th of June 2009 (the station ‘Power’) the Aixplorer is used as the audiovisual guide to the city hall. Currently it guides both through the city hall and the Centre Charlemagne and can be rented at both locations.

The Media Computing Group of the RWTH Aachen University uses the Aixplorer as a research project. The seamless combination of various location tracking techniques is a novel approach in a tour guide. No existing system offers exact position tracking inside as well as outside of buildings.
